The Senate yesterday unanimously rejected the Federal Government ban on the import of vehicles through land borders into the country.
The Red Chamber described the policy as anti-people and should further impoverish Nigerians.
Deputy Senate President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu who presided at yesterday's plenary, specially invited President Muhammadu Buhari listen to the cries of Nigerians and annul the decision.
"From contribution here, it is obvious that the policy is unpopular. We are representatives of the people and the people have spoken through us who do not want this policy. I think the government should listen to them," said Ekweremadu.
Adoption of two, three prayers, the Senate urged Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to "immediately suspend the campaign to ban imports of vehicles through our land borders as January 1, 2017."
The Senate Committee on Customs and Excise is mandated to investigate the circumstances that led to the decisions of the government.
Sponsor movement, Barau Jibrin from Kano State, explained that the ban would lead to the loss of about 500,000 jobs.
He further states: "The economy of border villages and towns that depend on the activity of vehicle imports will be affected, to the detriment of all.
"Since the announcement, through the NCS, Nigerians have spoken, and they still do, that it is not economically practical to ban the import of vehicles through our land borders with regard to a branch of such policies on the economy.
Senators who spoke on the matter, condemned the policy.
Immediate past Senate Leader, Ali ndum said: "Let us not forget the fact that the Constitution says that the primary responsibility of the government for the safety and welfare of the people. This policy will do much small businesses useless. My constituents disturbing me to ensure that this policy is reversed.
"Why can not Nigeria look at their policies to ensure that our laws are reformed? Senator Dino Melayu said, with politics, this" reception by the Customs to have the capacity to effectively mount our borders. As Parliament, we must speak in the interest of the nation. It should be seen to be defending the people that are here. "
Former Ebonyi State governor, Sam Egwu, said the policy "unpopular policies. It is the government that is supposed to make a difference and helping people. But they are brought difficulties to the people.
"This Senate must stand with the people. We have to defend the people. The government needs to put on your thinking cap and come up with policies that are beneficial to the people."
Chairman of the works, Kabiru Gaya agreed that, although "this is our government, as legislators, must be the truth.
"By stopping imports through land borders, we are creating difficulties. Other countries in the West Africa region, have lower tariffs. We have to look at this question.
"Let the Government to man the border and do the right thing. Do these policies, we have created a new unemployment of over 500,000. This policy can increase the two countries. It should reverse the former policy. It should stop the policy."
The Committee, headed by Senator Hope Uzodinma, is expected to report within two weeks.
The federal government recently launched new tariffs on imported goods and placed a total ban on imports of vehicles over land borders.
Since the policy was introduced, it has generated mixed reactions, with most Nigerians, calling for a reversal of policy.
