The Nigerian military said it had recovered the bodies of one official and 15 soldiers, was found dead in a large river in the north-east.
The remains of 16 soldiers, who were part of the 46 officially declared missing more than six weeks, were discovered on January 5, 2017, around 19:45, the soldiers in cooperation with the civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), said the theater commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, major general Lucky Irabor.
Irabor said this at a press conference in the military command and control center in Maiduguri, Borno state, today.
He said that the remains of the soldiers were found in the River Yobe,
"January 5, 2017, at about 0745hrs, our troops, combined with CJTF water cleansing operation with Damasak-Gashigar Road. Troops successfully saves the Duomo, Asaga, Gashigar and other surrounding villages. In the village of Asaga, our troops encountered and riddling some Boko Haram terrorist elements.
"After that, troops recovered the bodies one officer and 15 soldiers earlier declared missing in action, when dislodgement of Gashigar on October 16, 2016. The bodies were found along the River Kamadugou lines. Among the bodies recovered was that LT-Col. Yusuf K., former manager 223 Tank Battalion. they have since been buried in Maimalari Cantonment cemetery, with military honors, "he said.
"About 83 soldiers manning a forward operations base in Gashigar, Borno state, disappeared in large Boko Haram attack in the evening on October 16, 2016. After initial resistance, the troops left their base and bounced to safety.
"As they withdrew, some of the soldiers jumped into the River Yobe escape advancing rebels. The terrorists opened fire, however, kills some of the soldiers and the wounding of others," said Irabor.
Afterwards, Yusuf declared missing.
Boko Haram insurgency since 2009 has caused the death of about 20,000 people.
Terrorist groups, however, suffered heavy losses, including its stronghold Sambis Forest soldiers last month.
